About our fabrics
We invite anyone who is looking to source their materials more responsibly to visit our Brooklyn Warehouse and handpick from our wide selection of materials that include not only just fabric scraps and yardage but also leather hides, yarn cones, and trim.
These fabrics are recovered from high-end designers in New York City, and FABSCRAP separates all reusable materials during the sorting process to offer them to the public at thrift-store pricing, sold as a sustainable alternative to destruction and discard in landfills.
By rescuing this surplus from design studios and fashion brands, we offer makers, artists, students, and small businesses access to premium materials at a fraction of their original cost.
Why Reuse?
It’s so important to stop and question, “why are these fabrics trash?” Using a material to its fullest extent, rather than carelessly discarding it, is always going to be the most sustainable option. Reuse avoids extensive resource extraction of virgin materials, or even additional resource usage involved in downcycling or recycling.
Every 10 pounds of fabric that designers, artists, crafters, and makers source from FABSCRAP and save from landfill has the same CO2-reducing benefit as planting a tree. That’s a huge, measured impact!

Shoddy
At FABSCRAP, downcycling is shredding small pieces of fabric into shoddy.
Shoddy is typically used for industrial insulation such as carpet padding, mattress stuffing, furniture lining, moving blankets, car door linings, and more, but it can also be used for creative projects crafts like dolls and stuffed animals, and filling pillows, cushions, blankets, etc!
Our community of makers have incorporated shoddy into incredibly inspiring projects, which further illustrates the good that can come from collaboration across industries!
