Role: PART-TIME volunteer COORDINATOR

About the Position

FABSCRAP is a start-up nonprofit rethinking textile waste in the fashion, interior design, and entertainment industries in NYC. We provide convenient pickup of unwanted fabric and actively engage the local creative community in reuse.

The Part-time Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for organizing and enhancing the volunteer program at FABSCRAP. This role includes managing volunteer activities, and fostering strong volunteer relationships to support FABSCRAP's mission. This volunteer coordinator will ensure a welcoming environment while optimizing operations through strategic data use and community engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Excellent communication skills for managing volunteer interactions.

  • Commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

  • Experience in volunteer coordination or related roles (a plus)

  • Experience in education or public speaking (a plus).

  • Extreme attention to detail and organization means you’ll fit in great here!

  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills - efficient but accurate work is required!

  • A) Volunteer Activities

    • Schedule and post volunteer sessions, track attendance, and communicate with volunteers.

    • Conduct trainings and demos at each session, explaining volunteer thank-you options.

    • Coordinate group volunteer events, including sessions for corporate, school, and community groups at the warehouse.

    • Organize volunteer appreciation events, express gratitude and impact, and find ways to increase engagement and responsibility among veteran volunteers.

    • Manage sorting data by brand and maintain sorted-weight processes to increase impact.

    • Manage volunteer data, evaluate current activities, and adapt practices to enhance attendance and efficiency.

    • Handle administrative duties like sending invoices, tracking payments, and updating calendars.

    B) Volunteer Stations and Layout

    • Upkeep brand assignments for each sorting station for every session – this includes repetitive lifting of bags or boxes that may be up to 50 pounds with volunteer/team assistance

    • Maintain an orderly fabric sorting stations, managing updated signage and instructions, supplies and keeping the volunteer stations clean.

    • Keep supplemental materials like like chairs, empty bags, carts, etc so they are also organized and accessible within the space.

    • Communicate supply needs for timely procurement.

    C) Volunteer Relations

    • Provide a welcoming atmosphere by greeting volunteers, educating them on the tasks of the day, understanding their needs, and making appropriate suggestions

    • Handle volunteer concerns with empathy, turning any frustration into satisfaction

    • Respond to volunteer email inquiries and encourage participation through thoughtful suggestions

    • Build and nurture relationships with volunteers.

    D) Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach

    • Work with leadership to boost volunteer engagement via newsletters and social media.

    • Attend events for FABSCRAP, manage logistics, and gather contact information for potential volunteers.

    • Find new ways to recruit and retain volunteers, connecting with community groups to maximize impact.

    • Making connections to related community groups and collaborating to increase our impact and recruit volunteers

    E) Managing Interns

    • Train and manage interns to assist with volunteer activities.

    • Lead and manage event groups and provide constructive feedback to interns.

    F) Budget-Focus

    • Find creative ways to reduce operational costs and increase revenue. Participate in fundraising, particularly during key campaigns.

    G) Mission-Focus

    • Understand and embody Fabscrap’s mission, impact, and volunteer program. Recognize and communicate personal contributions to industry-changing work.

     

    H) Teamwork-Focus

    • Foster a collaborative and supportive workplace, contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

    I) Safety Focus

    • Ensure a safe, clean, and organized space for team and visitors. Communicate safety concerns promptly.

    Other Activities (As Needed):

    • Communicate supply needs and maintain records.

    • Assist at FABSCRAP events and with extra tasks as needed.

    • Represent FABSCRAP positively and provide strategic feedback to support growth.

Schedule

Start Date: ASAP

Part Time: 3-4 days per week

Tuesdays to Saturdays, 8:30am-4:30pm

*Saturday availability is a must.

This is an in-person position with no remote work.

Compensation

$20 per hour
