SORTER - PART TIME, BROOKLYN, NY
ABOUT THE POSITIONS
FABSCRAP is a start-up nonprofit rethinking textile waste in the fashion, interior design, and entertainment industries in NYC. We provide convenient pickup and data on unwanted fabric and actively engage the local creative community in reuse.
We are looking for a part-time sorter help us sort through pieces of fabric that companies typically throw away for recycling. This sorting position requires the use of scissors or staple removers to remove paper, cardboard, glue, staples, etc from the fabric pieces so that the fabrics can be shredded into insulation. Sorters' main and primary responsibility is to sort as much fabric as possible with accuracy. Ideal candidates are dependable individuals who can self-manage their time well!
You will be working directly with our Warehouse Manager in our private warehouse space. This position requires an NDA since you’ll be seeing and sorting proprietary and confidential materials from all our partner brands!
We’re growing rapidly and need administrative, operational, and strategic assistance. We’re a small team and everyone contributes beyond their core responsibilities. Teamwork and initiative are a must! Because of the start-up nature of our work, things move quickly, and you’ll have real ownership to define and refine procedures. We are excited for the sorting team to grow - leadership positions will become available.
3 Days per week
$18.50/hour
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Sorting Proprietary Material
a. removing paper from cutting room scraps
b. removing headers, paper, staples, stickers, etc from fabric swatches
c. sorting by fiber content (no prior fabric knowledge necessary!)
d. deconstructing sample garments or returned garments
e. removing tags, hangers, and trims from mutilated garments
f. maintaining a clean and organized workspace
Data Collection
a. maintaining brand details through the sorting process
b. resetting the sorting station and data as necessary
c. accurate data entry
Assisting Sorters, Receivers, and Operations Team
a. making strategic choices to create space
b. keeping all equipment in good repair
c. keeping our warehouse facilities clean and organized
d. communicating when equipment needs to be purchased
e. assisting with shred day and the movement of materials between our public and private warehouse spaces
Budget-Focus
Finding creative ways to reuse materials and tools – bags, boxes, sharpening scissors, etc. This also includes bringing in donations and fundraising, particularly during our anniversary and end-of-year giving campaigns.
Mission-Focus
A successful Sorter understands the details of our mission, our impact, our system, our locations, our events, our partners, our volunteer program, and how to create access to fabric. Most importantly, recognizes their contribution to our industry-changing work!
Teamwork-Focus
Collaborating with all members of the FABSCRAP Team to create a safe, supportive, and productive workplace. Including a commitment to direct and genuine conflict resolution and an open and honest contribution to FABSCRAP’s developing diversity, equity, and inclusion work.

OTHER ACTIVITIES (AS NEEDED)
Working at FABSCRAP events
Availability when extra hands are needed in other Departments
Representing FABSCRAP appropriately, honestly, and with a positive attitude
Providing strategic feedback often to help FABSCRAP grow and succeed
Providing photos and content for social media, website, and annual report
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Dependable and Responsible
Must be able to frequently lift 50 pound bags/boxes
Some experience in Google suite, Microsoft suite, and Slack preferred
Comfortable using sharp scissors
Teamwork!
SCHEDULE
Start Date: ASAP
Part Time: 3 days/week, 9am-5pm
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays
