EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

ABOUT THE POSITION

FABSCRAP is a start-up nonprofit rethinking textile waste in the fashion, interior design, and entertainment industries in NYC. We provide convenient pickup of unwanted fabric and actively engage the local creative community in reuse.

The Executive Director provides vision and leadership for our organization. This role oversees all aspects of the organization, including: operations, finance, programs, staff, and volunteers, with a primary focus on driving strategic planning, fundraising, and stakeholder relationships. To achieve FABSCRAP’s mission and goals, the Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors on development and implementation of initiatives, and will be responsible for the organization’s sustainability and success. The FABSCRAP Executive Director serves as the public face of the organization and must maintain a strong relationship with our community and partners. This leadership position plays the primary role in the realization of the organization’s values, both internally and externally.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE

  • Work with the Board of Directors to determine FABSCRAP’s long-term strategy and lead next steps

  • Improve the operational procedures and systems, increase efficiency, and build capacity

  • Increase awareness of the organization, its mission, and its impact

  • Seek and capitalize on opportunities for collaboration and growth

  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction

  • Identify and direct staffing requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong work culture that attracts and retains people

  • Develop an actionable plan for fundraising and building monthly cash flow

  • Assess and address issues affecting the organization

  • Comply with all national and local regulations

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

A) STRATEGIC PLANNING

  1. Identify opportunities for growth and expansion, and in collaboration with the Board of Directors, develop plans to pursue them.

  2. Conduct regular assessments of the organization’s performance and adjust the strategic plan as needed.

  3. Maintain awareness of the waste management and fashion trends, market landscape, and industry developments, identifying opportunities for expansion, improvement, cost reduction, and systems enhancement.

  4. Clearly articulate the vision, mission, and strategic direction of the organization. Thoroughly align the entire organization so that everyone is working efficiently in the same direction.

B) FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT

  1. Lead comprehensive financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting while managing risk assessment to ensure accuracy and mitigate financial challenges.

  2. Monitor and improve financial health, including review of cash flow, income statements, balance statements, and statements of functional expenses.

  3. Creation and adherence to financial controls, compliance with all financial regulations and requirements.

  4. Manage annual audits and all annual tax filings.

C) BOARD RELATIONS

  1. Communicate important circumstances and events Board of Directors to keep them apprised of potential impacts on the organization. Provide the board with the resources it needs to incite change and promote growth.

  2. Serve as liaison between Board of Directors and Team. Relay staff successes, ideas, and concerns, and translate Board objectives and initiatives into day-to-day deliverables for the team.

  3. Plan meetings and prepare and information for quarterly Board meetings in coordination with the Board President, and special topic meetings as called.

  4. Assist with Board Member recruitment, relationship building, and development.

D) STAFF MANAGEMENT AND HR

  1. Implement HR handbook and ongoing development of workplace policies and procedures for workplace safety and stability.

  2. Direct recruitment, onboarding, retention, management, professional development, training, and compliance.

  3. Create clear staff roles, and supervising collaborative tasks to ensure that they are done efficiently, inclusively, and with respect. Illustrating initiative, effective delegation, and decision-making.

  4. Maintain and enhance company culture of teamwork, optimism, and integrity. Nurturing our organization’s and team’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

E) PUBLIC REPRESENTATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  1. Invest in cultivating strong relationships with peers, donors, associations, industry affiliates, customers, the media, and other stakeholders.

  2. Build collaborative and transparent alliances and strategic partnerships.

  3. Require and maintain the consistency of the organization’s brand and messaging across all channels.

  4. Act as the organization’s spokesperson and represent the organization at public events, speaking engagements, and in advocacy opportunities.

F) PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION

  1. Work with the Board or Directors, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure that the mixture of programs and activities will achieve the FABSCRAP’s mission.

  2. Develop a culture and process of reflection and review. Guide the Team in creating objectives, goals, and data-driven tracking processes. Evaluate outcomes, large and small, to drive decisions and evolution of programs.

  3. Ensure proper equipment and technologies are in place for efficient and safe operations, fundraising, communications, collaboration, document creation and storage, productivity, record keeping, etc. Creatie and maintain policies to ensure the appropriate use of equipment and technologies, and planning/budgeting for upgrades needed for future success.

  4. Maintain steadfast focus and adherence to the scope of FABSCRAP’s mission.

G) FUNDRAISING

  1. Provide fundraising guidance related to grant and contribution pipeline, strategy, retention, and applications.

  2. Create the conditions for fundraising success: vision, goals, campaigns, materials, training, talking-points, technology, etc. Empower the Board of Directors and Team to tell the organization’s story well.

  3. Instilling a culture of fundraising and leadership and ensure the funds are there to execute the budget.

H) COMPLIANCE AND BEST PRACTICE

  1. Drive success, impact, efficiencies, and results while minimizing risk to the nonprofit organization.

  2. Maintain compliance with all laws and regulations. Create systems to monitor compliance.

  3. Exceed legal compliance to meet the highest standards possible for our industry and region.

  4. Work with legal counsel and insurance broker to ensure FABSCRAP is appropriately represented and adequately protected.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Experience. At least 8+ years in a leadership or senior management role, particularly in a nonprofit.

  • Operational Expertise. Waste management, warehousing, logistics, or industrial operations experience required. Ability to scale systems for efficient and safe growth and long-term capacity building.

  • Leadership. Excellence in organizational management with the interest and skill to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives. Inspire others.

  • Financial Oversight. Proven understanding of non-profit financial management principles, budgeting, and audits. 

  • Communication. Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

  • Continuous Evaluation and High Expectations. Unwavering commitment to quality programs, data-driven decision making, and exploring paths for positive growth and evolution.

  • Strategic Thinking. Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning. Working across timelines: short- and long-term planning, while adjusting day-to-day operations towards those plans.

Full Time: Monday - Friday

This is an in-person position with occasional remote work

$65,000 - $75,000
